Moonlight (runtime)

Moonlight is a free and open source implementation of Microsoft's web application framework Silverlight, which is developed by the Mono project. Version 1.0 of the project was released on 20 January 2009.

Status and Development Plan

In an interview in early June 2007 Miguel de Icaza said that the Mono team suppose to be able to submit a feasibility study by mid-June 2007 and can also support the Firefox browser on Linux by the end of the year.

After a three-week "hack orgy " of the Mono team (to which, among others, Chris Toshok, Larry Ewing and Jeffrey Stedfast took part ) could be presented to a public demo version on 21 June 2007 on the Microsoft ReMix conference in Paris, France.

Nevertheless, developers had to compile in September 2007 ( the experimental Mono subproject with. NET 3.0 support ) from the Mono SVN repository is still a large portion of the modules of mono and Olive and install to test Moonlight can. A Moonlight IDE called Lunar Eclipse for XAML designs exist in the SVN repository. It should be included in future as an add -on in MonoDevelop.

Currently Moonlight is available as a Firefox plugin for some versions of Firefox on different Linux distributions. The users are reminded that the currently downloadable versions are merely snapshots of the current development and thus neither complete nor are functioning properly. In particular, the support of Firefox 3 is known to be faulty. The plugin itself comes with no codec pack as soon as the Moonlight plugin but playable media recognizes the user will be redirected to download the free media codec package from Microsoft.

The first complete and current version of Moonlight 2.0 supports the specification of Silverlight version 2.0 and was published on 17 December 2009. It also includes some features of Silverlight 3

The, released in February 2011, preview version of Moonlight 4, however, already fully supports Silverlight 3.0, and some Silverlight 4.0.

In May 2012, Miguel de Icaza announced that the development of Moonlight for Linux is set.

Moonlight uses the Cairo library for rendering.
