Moorbank Botanic Gardens

The Moor Bank Garden is the botanic garden of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is operated by the University of Newcastle was established in 1923. The system includes 3 acres and is located near the Town Moor at Claremont Road. Greenhouses show tropical and desert plants. The outdoor area shows Rhododendron from the Kilbryde Garden in Prospect Hill plant collector Randle Cooke (1880-1973), the house and gardens of the University bequeathed a collection of primroses and rare Scheinmohn from China and Nepal, as well as beds, showing the vegetation of Teesdale, including rare women coat varieties. More beds show the types of snowball and Winter Hazel. Even Lord Ridley of Blagdon donated plants.

The garden is open to the public under the National Garden Schemes. 2012 was awarded the Garden of 12,200 pounds from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to facilitate access for the public. Head is currently (2013 ) Anne Borland.

The greenhouses are to be closed with the move of the University in late November, 2013, which means the death of all exotic plants. An association, Friends of Moor Bank, founded to save themselves around the plant. Northumberland College has agreed to take over the care of the city, which is part of the reason, but has not consented. The University plans to set up a new biological research center in Cockle Park near Morpeth. She sees the botanical garden as no longer appropriate.
