Mopan people

The Mopan Maya are a Mayan ethnicity and living in Belize and Guatemala (Central America).

Originally they lived in the lowlands of Central Belize and the Petén region (Guatemala), through the establishment of the State British Honduras (now Belize) but they were pushed to the western border of Belize. Today, the town of San Antonio in Toledo province is the largest Mopan settlement in Belize. Most of the Mopan Maya work in small family groups in agriculture - modern equipment hold very slow but moving into the daily work routine. You are Christianized today, and the church is an important part of their lives.

In Belize today still live about 6,000 speakers of Mopan language - in Guatemala is approximately 2,500.
