Mopan River

The Mopan is a river in Central America, which is called in Guatemala Río Mopan and Belize Mopan River. The Belizean capital of Belmopan is named after the river.

The river rises in Petén in Guatemala and flows about 50 kilometers to the north before turning east and in Benque Viejo del Carmen, the Belize border happened. There, it flows through the Cayo District and joins with San Ignacio with the Macal River to the Belize River.

The Maya ruins of Xunantunich is located approximately one kilometer from the Mopan, and this has to be crossed by means of hand-operated ferry.

The Mopan has long been an important source of drinking water, but was polluted more and more in recent years.
