MOPITT

MOPITT ( Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere ) is a scientific instrument, which was launched aboard the Terra satellite of NASA in 1999. The instrument measures the presence of methane and carbon monoxide in the lower atmosphere using the gas correlation spectroscopy. The instrument was funded by the Canadian Space Agency ( CSA).

Technology

The MOPITT system is a vertically oriented to the earth instrument which measures infrared radiation between 4.7 microns and 2.2-2.4 microns wavelength. It uses the correlation spectroscopy to calculate the Kohlenstoffmonoxidvorkommen in the lower atmosphere. Additionally, the instrument should measure the methane deposits, but so far no results have been published.
