Mopti Region

The Mopti Region is located in central Mali. It has an area of ​​79,017 km ² and had according to the last census in 2009, about one million inhabitants. For 2009, the population is according to census in 2.03733 million.

Among the inhabitants belong Bozo, Dogon, Songhai, Fulani and Bambara.

The main cities are the capital region of Mopti, Djenne and Douentza. In the region of Mopti and Bandiagara cliffs of the Great Mosque of Djenné as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular tourist destinations are located. The River Niger fans out here on the inland delta. The Hombori Tondo is the highest point in Mali.

The region is located in the Sahel. Until the 1970s it was an exporter of rice, fish and cattle. Due to the droughts in the 1970s and early 1980s (see famine in the Sahel ) Mopti but suffers from considerable deficits in the production of staple foods, particularly cereals.
