Morane is an uninhabited atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. Administratively Morane belongs to the municipality Gambier. The nearest atoll is Maria Est, 153 km south-west location.

Morane is the southernmost atoll of the Tuamotu group. It reaches the dimensions of 4.8 km in length × 3.2 km wide. The lagoon of the atoll has no access to the sea.

History

The atoll was sighted by the whalers Nathaniel Cary 1832. He named the island after the name of his ship ( Gideon Barstow ), " Barstow Iceland ". On some cards, the atoll is also listed under the name of " Cadmus ".

Fauna and Flora

The Morane Atoll has the largest population of the South Seas traveler ( Prosobonia cancellata ) of about 150 to 200 individuals. On the atoll of growing coconut trees.
