The Inca system Moray is a complex consisting of several terraces at different heights. It was built in three major natural sinkholes of different depth. The deepest sinkhole with about 70 meters, the lowest 28 meters are equipped with terraces, ie Qechuyoq. The first seven terraces, spanning about 15 meters, are arranged concentrically. The eighth terrace breaks in a northwesterly direction from the schema and widened here the acreage on the seventh terrace. The remaining terraces follow the course of the eighth. Except in the largest sink the plants are concentric and circular. Until 50 years ago, potatoes and barley were grown on the premises. By terracing and the arrangement in the round results in a superposition of the macro climate with several, different for each terrace microclimates. Maybe Moray was used by the Incas as an agricultural experimental field for studying the influence of these micro-climates on plant growth.

Location

Moray is embedded in a limestone plateau, about 3,500 meters above sea level, seven kilometers west of the village of Maras and 32 km northwest of Cusco, elevated above the Valle Sagrado of the Rio Urubamba is located. In the southwest of the plant of the 4100 meter high Wayñunmarka is.

Irrigation system

From a water-bearing layer of the Wayñunmarka fed up until 50 years ago when the water was diverted for water supply of Maras, the water supply to the system. To date, the irrigation system of the system is clearly visible. The water entered at the southern end of the plant and is passed through an elaborate canal system, which includes an aqueduct, in the various parts. The duct system distributes the water in stages. The main channels, the so-called Paqcha divert the water to the highest point of each terrace. From there, distribute more channels the water to the deepest part of each terrace to the north. More channels try the unwanted loss of water to eliminate possible.
