Morcote

Morcote is a municipality in the district of Paradiso, in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Geography

It is located ten kilometers southwest of Lugano in the southern part of Lake Lugano, across from the Italian Porto Ceresio, at the foot of the 822 meter high Monte Arbostora. The formerly important towered over by the Palearifestung trading center is today with its beautiful position on a slope, the Parco Scherrer, its palaces, a monumental church staircase with 404 steps, the famous cemetery, the arcades at the lakeside road, not only many a tourist destination, but with the Arbostora district for over 30 years a sought, which expands to his natural limits certain residential area.

History

Is first mentioned in the year 926 Morcote as " Murcau ". The name means "at the end of the mountain", from the Latin " Morae caput ".

Until the construction of the causeway known better than Ponte Diga Melide in 1847 Morcote was an important trade hub and the largest port on Lake Lugano. The goods on the connecting route between the Ticino and Northern Italy were reloaded in Morcote on ships and taken across the lake. Morcote belonged in the Middle Ages to the sphere of influence of the Dukes of Milan. After the plague year of 1432 survived in Morcote only just seven families. In a landslide in 1862 sank seven houses in the lake.

The church probably founded in the 13th century Santa Maria del Sasso was built from 1462 in the Renaissance style largely new and 1758 in Baroque style.
