Mordecai Ehrenpreis

Mordechai Ehrenpreis (later: Markus speedwell, also: Marcus Ehrenpreis, born June 25, 1869 in Lviv, † February 26, 1951 Saltsjöbaden ) was a Hebrew writer, translator, publicist, rabbis and Zionist.

He began to write in Yiddish as a teenager and studied at German universities and at the College of Jewish Studies in Berlin later. Since 1884, employees at the "Ha- Maggid ," and " Ha - Meliz ". From 1896 to 1900 he was rabbi in Djakovar, Croatia.

Even before Herzl Nathan Birnbaum, speedwell and others were actively engaged in defining the concept of a new National Judaism with one, whatsoever national center in Palestine. Speedwell was an early supporter of Zionism and Herzl staff in the preparations for the first Zionist Congress. Speedwell 'wife, Ernestine Esther Speedwell, was among the 14 female participants at the first Zionist Congress, and Mordechai Ehrenpreis had bought on Herzl's request, the Hebrew version of the invitation letter. Since that time, he enjoyed general recognition of his expertise in matters of Jewish culture. He was a mediator of Hebrew Literature at the German -speaking audiences ( numerous articles ).

From 1900 to 1914 he was Chief Rabbi of Bulgaria in Sofia and also editor of several journals spaniolischer.

After 1908 his interest in Zionism and the Hebrew literature subsided noticeably, which earned him a lot of criticism of Zionists; he devoted himself to other literary works and the tasks of the rabbinate.

From 1914 until his death he was Chief Rabbi of Stockholm.

In 1928 he founded the " Judisk Tidskrift " (formerly " Israelites " ), worked as a translator as well as employees at various encyclopedias, since 1935, he worked as an honorary professor at the University of Stockholm.
