Morecambe

Morecambe is a seaside resort in the North West of England and belongs administratively to the City of Lancaster in the county of Lancashire.

Geography

Morecambe is located at Morecambe Bay, a 20 km wide, characterized by Watt bay of the Irish Sea. The city has about 45,000 inhabitants (as of 2003).

History

Morecambe was created in 1889 from the merger of the villages of Bare, Poulton- le -Sands and Torrisholme. In Morecambe numerous ships and submarines were scrapped, including parts of the Imperial German U- boat fleet, which had fallen into British hands in 1918, or even the Majestic. In the mid-20th century Morecambe flourished as a resort. While further south, Blackpool was mainly frequented by visitors from Lancashire, Morecambe was a destination for tourists from Yorkshire and Scotland. Here also the competition for the Miss Great Britain took place in the years 1956 until 1989. Meanwhile, however, the tourists flow has subsided.

Of the two piers jutting into the sea earlier and have shaped the city today is none more preserved. Several entertainment centers such as the "World of Crinkley Bottom", the Aqua Park "Bubbles " and " Frontierland " had to close. Above all, the West Morecambe temporarily became a problem district, but is now also investing there again in new construction projects. Typical of this is that of the Midland Hotel, an Art Deco building, which was reopened in 2006, and the new edition of Morecambe beauty contest remodeling.

Since 1983, is located south of the city, the Heysham nuclear power plant, which was established in 1988 followed by a second block and produces an output of 2,490 MW of power.

In the headlines Morecambe came on February 5, 2004, when 21 Chinese migrant workers were surprised when collecting shells in the mud of the onrushing tide off the coast of the city and drowned.
