Moresby Island

Moresby Iceland ( Haida: Gwaii Hanas ) is the southern part of Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada in the Pacific Ocean. It is the third largest of the Canadian Pacific Islands.

The island has an area of ​​2608 km ² with a coastline of 1180 km and reaches a height of up to 1143 m above sea level. The Skidegate Channel, a narrow strait in the south, separates it from the main island of Iceland Graham ( Haida: Haida Gwaii ).

The English name of the island is similar to General Fairfax Moresby. The original name, Gwaii Haanas, comes from the natives of the region and was the inspiration for the name National Park on the island.

Almost all residents of Moresby live in Sandspit, a town on the north coast.
