Morgan County (Illinois)

The Morgan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 35 547 inhabitants and a population density of 24.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Jacksonville.

Geography

The County is located in west-central Illinois and reaches on its western border the Illinois River. It has an area of 1482 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. At the Morgan County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

In the extreme north-west of the county lies by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service maintained Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge, which extends north to neighboring Cass County.

History

The Morgan County was formed on January 31, 1823 from parts of Greene County and Sangamon County. It was named for Daniel Morgan (1736-1802), a brigadier general of the Continental Army and commander of the Rifle Brigade, who had defeated the British Army at the Battle of Cowpens during the American Revolutionary War. From 1797 to 1799 he was a representative of Virginia.

The first white settlement is recorded from 1818.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Morgan County 35 547 people in 13,993 households. The population density was 24.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 13,993 households lived statistically 2.33 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 91.2 percent white, 6.3 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.2 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

21 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17 percent were 65 years or older. 49.8 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 44,731. The per capita income was $ 23,598. 15.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
