Morgan County (West Virginia)

Morgan County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bath (West Virginia).

Geography

The County is located in the top north-east of West Virginia, adjacent to Maryland, south to Virginia and has an area of 593 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County ( Maryland), Berkeley County, Frederick County ( Virginia), Hampshire County and Allegany County ( Maryland).

History

Morgan County was formed on February 9, 1820 from parts of Berkeley County and Hampshire County. It was named for Daniel Morgan, a member of the House of Representatives for Virginia and a general in the American Revolutionary War and commander of the troops during the Whiskey Rebellion.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Morgan County 14,943 people in 6,145 households and 4,344 families. The population density was 25 people per square kilometer.
