Moritz Lewitt

Moritz Lewitt ( born August 12, 1863 in Poznan, † April 1, 1936 in Berlin) was a German chess player and composer. Lewitt participated in numerous tournaments and achieved some success in the practical game.

Lewitt composed over 150 endgame studies. He also worked as a solver of chess compositions.

Chess functionary

Lewitt was in 1892 elected librarian of the Berlin Chess Club. From 1908 to 1910 he was secretary of the German Chess Federation. After many years as the first chairman of the Berlin Chess Club Lewitt was named after the rejection of his re-election on 14 October 1910 an honorary member of the Berlin Chess Club. 1922 Lewitt was co-organizer of the countries struggle against Sweden and the Swedish team devoted a chess study.

Private

Lewitt had a doctorate and worked as a practicing physician. He carried the honorary title Sanitätsrat.

As an author of several chess books Lewitt was also involved. In his last years, he was preparing a book about his chess problems, which he could not finish. Lewitt 1933 suffered a stroke, the consequences of which he died in 1936.
