Moritz von Bethmann

Philipp Heinrich Moritz Alexander von Bethmann ( since 1854: Baron von Bethmann ) ( born October 8, 1811 in Frankfurt am Main, † December 2, 1877 ) was a German banker.

The eldest son of Simon Moritz von Bethmann born and Louise Friederike Boode was only 15 years old when his father died. In 1833 he joined the line at the Bank Brothers Bethmann. Bethmann promoted mainly the construction of railways. In 1836 he founded, together with the banking house of Rothschild, the Taunus- Eisenbahn AG, 1844, the Frankfurt- Hanau Railway Company and the Hessian Friedrich -Wilhelms- North Railroad Company. In the 1850s he was involved, inter alia, to on the Italian Central Railroad, the Austrian State Railways and the Rhein-Nahe Railway Company.

From 1854 to the end of the Free City of Frankfurt in 1866 Bethmann was Prussian Consul General in Frankfurt. In 1854 he was elevated to the Baden baron.

In 1863 he hosted the participants of the Frankfurt Prince day in his garden shed. Like his father, he was a generous patron and supporter of the Frankfurt art and cultural life.

The life disabled by a hip ailment Bethmann was married to Maria, born Baroness von Bose (1819-1882), with whom he had two sons and three daughters, including after his grandfather named Simon Moritz, who later became his successor as head of the house Bethmann took.
