Morley Callaghan

Morley Callaghan, CC, O.Ont ( born September 22, 1903 in Toronto, Ontario; † August 25, 1990 ) was a Canadian writer.

Life

The son of English immigrants studied law in Toronto, without, however, to take a legal profession. Instead, he worked in the twenties for the Toronto Daily Star, where he met Ernest Hemingway. As this also wrote Callaghan concise, realistic and psychologically insightful short stories. End of the twenties was included in 1929 for a few months also the group of modern writers of the Montparnasse in Paris, to the next Hemingway, among others, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald and James Joyce. In 1963 Callaghan these years - including a boxing match, which he delivered with Hemingway, where he defeated him clear.

Callaghan's novels and short stories are often about characters with a strong Catholic tradition, but injured self-esteem. Among the first works include Strange Fugitive 1928 A Native Argosy 1929, A Broken Journey in 1928 and search is my Beloved 1934. During the following years until 1950, he wrote largely journalistic texts. When his masterpiece is considered the novel The Loved and the Lost from 1951 to the later works include: . The Many Colored Coat ( 1960), A Passion in Rome ( 1961), Stories ( 1967), A Fine and Private Place ( 1975) A Time for Judas (1983 ), Our Lady of the Snows (1985) and A Wild Old Man down the Road (1988).

Callaghan was awarded several times for his works (including the Lome Pierce Medal). 1982 Morley Callaghan was appointed Member of the Order of Canada. In 1986, he received from the City of Toronto the Toronto Book Awards for Our Lady of the Snows.

He had two children, Michael and Barry; the latter was himself a writer. Callaghan died after a brief illness at the age of 87 years.
