Mormaer

Mormaer is a Scottish term and designated a regional or provincial ruler in medieval Scotland; match the UK title of Earl ( Count ). In medieval Latin it was translated comes or dux occasionally. In Scotland, there were about 12 to 15 Mormaerschaften. Originally Mormaer was directly subordinated to the Scottish king, but that does not reflect reality everywhere.
