Moro Gulf

The Gulf of Moro is formed from the bays and headlands of the Philippine island of Mindanao. It is part of Celebes Sea and is surrounded by the Zamboanga Peninsula and the central part of the island of Mindanao.

The Bay of Sibuguey and the bay of Illana are bays in the gulf. Other smaller bays are the Bay of Dumanquilas and Port Sibulan in the province Zamboanga Sibugay, the Bay of Pagadinan in Zamboanga del Sur and the Bay of Linao in the province of Maguindanao. Across the street from the Gulf of Basilan Moro is connected to the Sulu Sea.

The largest and most important city on its coast is Zamboanga City, located on its western shore. Another significant seaport is Cotabato City, which is located on its eastern coast.

On August 16, 1976 an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 on the Richter scale caused a tsunami wave, which sailed into the Morogolf and on the coasts killed more than 5,000 people.
