Morolo

Morolo is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 3275 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 76 km southeast of Rome and about 19 km west of Frosinone.

Geography

Morolo situated on a hill above the Saccotal. It is dominated by the towering Monti Lepini. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Lepini, Ausoni e Valliva.

The nearby towns are Ferentino, Gorga (RM ), Sgurgola and Supino.

Traffic

Morolo located 9 km from the A1 motorway Autostrada del Sole, exits Anagni Frosinone or removed.

With the train station Morolo, 7 km from the center, the place is on the railway line Rome - Naples.

History

In antiquity there was in the municipality of Morolo numerous Villae Rusticae. The theory that the Roman city was a predecessor Ecetra city of Morolo is, however, rejected by the majority today.

The first mention of the oppidum Murolum 1088, when it Urban II, the Bishop of Anagni imputed, which in turn gave it to the Colonna as a fief. 1216 destroyed Giovanni Conte di Ceccano the castle Morolo and killed 424 villagers. 1303 took Tommaso da Morolo in the assassination attempt against Pope Boniface VIII at Anagni part.

From 1385 to 1423 the Colonna succeeded once again to bring the territory of Morolo under their control. They ruled Morolo until 1809, when Morolo was part of the Roman Kingdom and under Napoleon. In 1870 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. 1927 came from the province of Rome to the newly formed province of Frosinone.
