Morondava

Morondava is a city on the west coast of Madagascar today with about 38,000 inhabitants. It is located 701 km from the capital Antananarivo.

The city is the economic center and capital of the region Menabe in Toliara Province. It is the third largest port on the western coast of Madagascar and has an airfield. The city has little industry ( wood processing, shipbuilding). Many residents live by trade, from tourism and fishing. They belong mostly to the people of the Sakalava.

Morondava is since 1955 the seat of a Catholic bishop. The population grew from 1975 19.061 1993 25.021 inhabitants on. Today is estimated up to 60,000 inhabitants.

The name means where the coastline is long. The city lies between the river and the mouth of Morondava Kabatomena.

The National Park Kirindy Mitea is Morondava.
