Morpheus (software)

Morpheus is the name of a file sharing program for Microsoft Windows, the (former Music City ) is operated by the company StreamCast Networks and sat originally on the OpenNap peer-to -peer ( P2P) platform.

On www.morpheus.com was a web-based search interface, as it had also Audiogalaxy, but can be looking at Morpheus for all types of media, not just the MP3s. Morpheus joined in 2001 by OpenNap protocol to Fast Track. On 26 February 2002 suddenly heard all Morpheus clients on to function as the FastTrack protocol was updated by the network operators, and all users of Morpheus were locked in one fell swoop from the seemingly uncontrollable network, could not connect. As it turned out, this was done due to unpaid bills by StreamCast to the owners of Fast Track. On 2 March 2003, a new, less stable version of the Morpheus client was released, which now sat on the Gnutella network and had taken over the network core of Gnucleus. After several clashes with the GPL, was published under the Gnucleus, Morpheus switched to a very outdated Jtella core. When the disputes were settled, Morpheus moved back to Gnucleus core. Since then, the network core has been repeatedly updated and now supports not only Gnutella2 also ' NEONET ', plugins for MLDonkey ( access to eDonkey2000, Overnet and FastTrack offer ) and, more recently, support for BitTorrent.

In April 2003, a federal court in Los Angeles against the actions of the RIAA and MPAA ruled that the file-sharing software from Grokster and StreamCast ( Morpheus P2P software distributors of ) was not legal. On 20 August 2003 has been lodged against this decision appeal. On 17 August 2004, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit precipitated a partial decision, which now posed the question whether a manufacturer of file-sharing software must stand up for copyright infringement of the end-user. The court ruled in favor of Grokster and StreamCast, which can not be held responsible for any unlawful acts of its end users.

In December 2004 the United States Supreme Court (Supreme Court ) agreed to be interviewed. The oral hearing was set for March 29, 2005. A final decision was expected in July 2005. When, in January 2006, the domains morpheus.com, www.streamcastnetworks.com and no longer musiccity.com were dissolved, the development of Morpheus appeared to have been set. Since February 2006, but websites are back online. Whether there have been changes in the background, is still unclear. Currently (January 2011) the site is, however, no longer reachable, the domain belongs currently PSINet.
