Morris Chang

Morris Chang ( * July 10, 1931 in Ningbo, China) is a Chinese- American engineer and manager in the semiconductor industry.

Life

Chang was the son of an administrative official in Ningbo, went to Hong Kong in 1948 and 1949 in the United States, where he began studying at Harvard University. He studied mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Bachelor 's degree in 1952 and a master's degree in 1953, went to Sylvana Semiconductor, because he could not at first doctorate at MIT, and in 1958 to Texas Instruments (TI). It was created in 1964 received his doctorate from Stanford University in Electrical Engineering (funded by TI). By 1983, he was with Texas Instruments, where he was instrumental in helping the company became one of the world's leading manufacturer of integrated circuits. He was vice president for the worldwide semiconductor division at TI.

In 1983 he left TI to become president and CEO of General Instrument Corporation. In 1984, he went to Taiwan to promote there behalf of the government whose industrial research. He led the Industrial Technology Research Institute ( ITRI ) and founded in 1987 the State Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ( TSMC ). There, companies could be producing integrated circuits, without having to build even expensive semiconductor factories. This practice was also earlier consistently at TI, which could produce at IBM. He is considered with this model as the father of Taiwanese semiconductor industry. Until 2005 he was Chairman of TSMC. In 2009 he regained his senior position at TSMC. In 1994 he was also chairman of the Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation ( a Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer which works a lot with TSMC together), which he remained until 2003.

He is a Fellow of the Computer History Museum and the National Academy of Engineering. In 2000 he received the Robert N. Noyce Medal of the IEEE in 2011 and the IEEE Medal of Honor He is a multiple honorary doctorates ( Chiao -Tung National University, Tsinghua University, National Central University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute ).

Chang lives with his wife Sophie in Taiwan. His hobbies are classical music and Bridge.
