Morrison Incident

As Morrison Incident (Japaneseモリソン 号 事件Morison gō jiken ) the expulsion of the U.S. merchant ship Morrison from the port of Kagoshima in Satsuma is 1837 designated by cannon fire. This was part of the edict for the expulsion of foreign ships by 1825 as part of the Japanese policy of isolation ( sakoku ).

In addition to commercial destinations the ship had tried seven shipwrecked Japanese, who had been taken in Macao return. Even missionaries were on board.

The goal of the ship, shipwrecked return became known the following year in Japan, and this has caused criticism of the edict.

Among the castaways was Otokichi Yamamoto (山 本 音 吉), who was known for his role in bridging the cultural gap between Japan and the rest of the world.
