Morschach

Morschach is a municipality in the district of Schwyz in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland.

Geography

It is located above the village of Brunnen SZ on a natural terrace above Lake Lucerne. The view takes in the southwest of the historic Rütliwiese and the moutains in the north- east on the wide valley basin of Schwyz.

History

1261 « Morsacho " is first mentioned. About Morschach led long period of pilgrimage and mule track over the Gotthard.

After the construction of access roads Axenstrasse a 1866 wells forth carved into the rock. From 1905 to 1968 drove the well - Morschach Railway, an electric rack railway, after the then world- famous resort with its sophisticated hotel palaces Axenfels and Axenstein and brought an illustrious audience, including Queen Victoria of Great Britain, King Ludwig II of Bavaria and Winston Churchill. It was intended to guide the web, even down to the Fronalpstock. This plan was thwarted in 1933 by the construction of the funicular railway to the Stoos.

The demise of the resort Morschach began when stayed away by the war and crisis years the hotel guests. The big hotels had to be closed; the Axenfels in 1947 and the Grand Hotel Axenstein canceled in 1967. Thus the fate of the already never particularly profitable cog railway was sealed.

Traffic

From fountain a two-lane side street leads up to Morschach. This route is served by the bus route No. 4 Auto AG Schwyz. From Morschach you can reach by cable car to the ski resort of Stoos still higher and from there to the Fronalpstock ( 1,922 m above sea level. M. ) or on foot on the road to Switzerland after the village of Uri Sisikon. From Axenstein two foot paths lead to Brunnen ( walk about 40 minutes).

Today one thing is to let the now vanished splendor resurrected in modern form again, including with the Swiss Holiday Park, the largest amusement park in Switzerland; the park includes indoor pools, an outdoor pool, a waterslide, and a spa section and a 4 -star hotel. Also, a new 9- hole golf course " Axenstein " was opened in May 2007.
