Morton County (Kansas)
Morton County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Elkhart. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme southwestern corner of Kansas, on the west by Colorado, on the south by Oklahoma and has an area of 1891 square kilometers without significant water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Stanton County and Stevens County.
History
Morton County was formed on 20 February 1886. It was named after Oliver P. Morton, an American politician and governor of Indiana during the American Civil War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Morton County 3496 people in 1306 households and 961 families in Morton County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.39 percent White, 0.20 percent African American, 1.14 percent Native American, 1.06 percent Asian, and 7.52 percent from other races; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 14.10 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1306 households out of which 36.6 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 64.2 percent were married couples living together, 6.8 percent were single mothers and 26.4 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent of all households were single-person households and 9.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.
29.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.0 percent 18 to 24 years 27.2 percent between 25 and 44, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 13.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 93.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 37,232, and the median income for a family was $ 43,494. Males have a median income of $ 31,875, women $ 19,474. The per capita income was $ 17,076. 8.5 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
