History

The history of the village is closely linked with that of the valley of the Soultzbach. It was ravaged by the plague in 1234, destroyed in 1376 by English troops in 1444 and by the Armagnacs.

The name may be traced back to the name Moritz and is occupied in the 1455 verdict of a knight, when the village formed a community with the immediately adjacent Soppe -le-Haut.

As part of the rule Thann, the village belonged since 1324 through marriage of Joan of Pfirt the Habsburgs and came in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia to France.

Jean Baptiste Joseph Gobel had in the 18th century a small castle in Mortzwiller.
