Mosaic Records

Mosaic Records is a jazz label, which was founded in 1982 by Michael Cuscuna and Charles Lourie ( deceased in 2000 ). It's on full reissues of out albums and sessions (often with hitherto unpublished material ) specializes of jazz musicians that are published with a detailed booklet with detailed information about the recording sessions and essays. In most cases the support is limited because the rights are owned by other labels and only be purchased for a limited edition. Examples of the catalog are Helen Merrill, Count Basie ( Verve studio recordings in 1950 and 1936 to 1940 with Lester Young), Sarah Vaughan ( Roulette), Hank Mobley ( Blue Note, 1950 ), Benny Golson / Art Farmer " Jazztet " ( Mercury, Argo ), Charlie Parker ( Benedetti Recordings, not limited edition ), Toshiko Akiyoshi / Lew Tabackin (first five studio albums from 1974 to 1977 ).

The idea was born when they were both on Blue Note Records, Lourie in 1974 as Marketing Director (previously at CBS ), Cuscuna as a producer. Cuscuna started 1975 Reissue Series at Blue Note, which had but always facing difficulties. The first three box sets were 1983 Complete Blue Note Recordings of Thelonious Monk ( nominated for a Grammy ), The Complete Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker and Tentette, The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis.

Since 1998, the label is no longer independent; Capitol Records owns 50 % of the label, which is now managed as part of Blue Note Records.

The mean circulation of the CD set is 5,000. Earl Hines The edition of 2012 is Box Set No. 254

In addition to the box kits have been around since 2003, a select series ( a collection of smaller scope that is not necessarily complete ) and since 2006 Mosaic Singles ( for reissues ). Initially passed the box sets of vinyl editions and even today there are occasional vinyl editions.
