Mosasaurinae
Live reconstruction of mosasaur beaugei
- Worldwide
The Mosasaurinae are a sub- family of the mosasaurs. They had a particularly long torso, with 42 to 45 vertebrae in front of the sacral vertebrae. In some forms the tail ended in a supported of the enlarged caudal vertebrae caudal fin ( Clidastes, Plotosaurus ). Zygapophyses ( long bone rods, the individual vortex elements combined ) were present in most taxa. The Hämalbögen at the base of the caudal spine were fused with the Wirbelcentra.
The limbs were often heavily modified and formed narrow, elongated fins with extra toe bones ( Hyperphalangie ). Radius and ulna were broad and short. At the subfamily include some of the advanced and highly specialized Mosasauriergattungen ( mosasaur, Plotosaurus, globin Dens ). The skull of these forms was not kinetically ( immobile ).
