History

The synagogue is located near the old Jewish Quarter in Moscow, the Zariadye, but the construction of the synagogue could not be done in Kitai -Gorod. Therefore, the synagogue in Bely Gorod (Russian Белый город ) was built in the white city. The construction was begun according to plans by the Austrian architect Simon Eibuschitz on 28 May 1887, however, interrupted in 1888. During the Russian Revolution the building was allowed to be continued and the synagogue was inaugurated in 1906.

In September 1948, Golda Meir met (then still known as Golda Meyerson ) as the first Israeli Ambassador to the USSR in Moscow and attended the synagogue unannounced on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
