Moscow is the county seat of Latah County in the U.S. state of Idaho. The place is located in the north of the state on the border with Washington. The city is a regional economic center for the embossed on agriculture Palouse region. It is also home to the University of Idaho, a major state university in Idaho. The city has 23,800 inhabitants (as of 2010). The town is the birthplace of Josh Ritter, a singer and songwriter.

Geography

The geographic coordinates of the city are 46 ° 43'54 "N, 116 ° 59'50 " W. The city is located at an altitude of 790m above sea level and extends over 15.9 km ². The city is located in a valley between the mountains of the Palouse Range ( 1,500 m) and the Paradise Ridge ( 1,100 m). The nearest town is Pullman ( Washington) 12.8 km to the west. History

The first settlers arrived in 1869 and named the area Hog Heaven. With the opening of the first post office in 1872, the community was called Paradise Valley, but the name was finally changed in 1875 in Moscow. However, the naming was not by Russian immigrants: Five settlers who could not agree on the name, instructed the postmaster, select a name for the settlement. This suggested Moscow, as the name stands for brotherly love.

With the opening of the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Railroad (now Union Pacific ) in 1885, many new settlers came to the place. This development was reinforced with the opening of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1890. This year, the city counted some 2,000 inhabitants.

As the new U.S. state of Washington was formed and many inhabitants of the region wanted to be part of this State, the government of the territorial area Idaho needed to create incentives for the region in Idaho remained. Therefore, the University of Idaho was settled in Moscow in 1889, which in 1892 the first students enrolled. In Pullman, which is only 12 km away, founded at the same time, the new Washington State university, Washington State University.
