The Moscow Zoo (Russian Московский зоопарк ) was opened in 1864 by several biology professors, making it the oldest zoo in Russia. In 1919, the zoo was nationalized and all but three years later, in 1922, into the possession of the city of Moscow, this has since managed.

When the zoo was opened, he had a size of 10 hectares with 286 animals. In 1926, the area was expanded to 18 hectares. The original building of the zoo were made of wood and had elaborate folk decorations. From 1990 to 1997, the zoo was modernized and enlarged to its present area of ​​approximately 21.5 hectares. Of these modifications was the redesign of the entrance area in the form of a castle and the creation of a pedestrian bridge (1864 ) and new (1926 ) connects the old part of the zoo. Previously acted the two parts as a kind of separate zoos, as they were separated by the Bolshaya Grusinskaya Street.
