Moshi is a town in northeastern Tanzania on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. In 2005, the city had about 156,000 inhabitants, according to estimates.

Moshi is the capital of the administrative region of Kilimanjaro.

History

Moshi was the seat of Dschaggahäuptlings Rindi, the south of Kilimanjaro passed through the control of the caravan route from 1860 to power and influence. When the Germans stretched their influence into the country, Rindi pulled her to his side to play them off against the other Dschaggaherrscher. So Moshi became the first German location on Kilimanjaro. 1891, Germans were expelled under Rindis son Meli, but returned in 1893 back by force. Moshi has been the administrative center of a district office. With the construction of the railway, the place gradually shifted approximately 6 km downhill into the "new" Moshi, while the historic center as " Old Moshi " is located on the northern outskirts today.

The late 19th century came under the protection of the German troops, Catholic and Lutheran missionaries in the area around Moshi ( Catholic missionary on the eastern slope, Lutheran missionary on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro ), which among other things was a factor that led to the level the education system in the city is higher than the country. Moshi is located on the paved road from Dar es Salaam to Arusha, the other major city in the northeast of the country. Arusha is approximately 80 km and Holili ( border town with Kenya) about 40 km away. Moshi is a railway terminus, which forms the terminus of the Usambara. The railway lines from Moshi to Tanga, Dar es Salaam and Arusha, and Voi and Mombasa in Kenya after are set for the passenger. The station is designed as a railhead and has extensive trackage and workshops. In 30 km distance, direction Arusha, is one of the two major international airports Tanzania: Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Education

In Moshi, there are two locations of Tumaini University and the International School Moshi. 2005, the Mwenge University College of Education ( MWUCE ) founded, which belongs to the University network of St. Augustine University of Tanzania ( SAUT ).

Climate

The Moshi town has a relatively stable climate, which is mainly determined by the presence of Mount Kilimanjaro. This, as well as the height of the town, keeps the temperature lower than that of the surrounding cities.
