The Moshoeshoe I International Airport ( IATA code: MSU, ICAO code: FXMM ), built in 1985, is an international airport located near the town of Mazenod, about 20 kilometers south of Maseru, the capital of Lesotho. From the late 1960s until the 1980s was the Leabua Jonathan Airport (now Mejametalana Airport ), named after the then Prime Minister of Lesotho Leabua Jonathan ( 1914-1987 ), the international airport in the country. This is but now only used by the military.

The airport is named after Moshoeshoe I ( † 1870), the founding father of the people of the Basotho. It has two passenger terminals, which are open from 05:00 bis 16:00 clock, and a cargo terminal.

Airlines and connections

Because Lesotho has no more state-owned airline since 1997, international flights are mainly from South African Airways ( operating airline: Airlink ) carried out, mostly to Johannesburg ( flight time 1 hour 10 minutes). Domestic flights are operated by Mission Aviation Fellowship and Mountain Airways.

Accessibility

There is a bus, which stops directly in Maseru at hourly intervals. Also available are taxis. Taxis to the airport leave in Maseru from the shopping center Mafika Mall.

The German Foreign Office writes (as of 2013, same warning in previous years): The new bypass road to Maseru airport was often lately the scene of carjacking. At night, they should be absolutely avoided.
