Mota, formerly Sugarloaf Iceland is a volcanic island in the center of the Banks Islands in the north of the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Administratively part of the island, like all the Banks Islands, the province of Torba.

Geography

Mota is 18 km south of Mota Lava and 12 kilometers east of Vanua Lava, the largest island of the archipelago. The slightly oval-shaped island has a length of 5 km and has an area of 9.5 km ². It is formed by an extinct basaltic volcano that reaches Mount Tawe, a height of 411 meters above the sea. The island is surrounded by a fringing reef and its steep coast makes a landing with boats difficult. Mota has 683 inhabitants; Capital is Veverao on the northwest coast of the island. The population speaks Mota, a Melanesian language from the group of Oceanic languages ​​, which is spoken only on this island.
