Motd (Unix)

MOTD is a term from the Internet scene and stands for message of the day, to German: " Message of the Day" or " message of the day".

This is a message that is displayed to the user on servers in the rule first. For example, often the Internet Relay Chat ( IRC) or on game servers.

Also in file sharing for files such as Direct Connect is a MOTD the rule.

On Linux and Unix systems, the MOTD message is usually stored in the motd / etc /. The contents of this file will be displayed after a successful login of a user, either directly at the console or via SSH remotely.

Mainly the MOTD will be used for this purpose, to draw attention to basic rules and / or policies of the server. Often there are also warnings directly pronounced or, Notes on current events.

As often as scheduled downtimes are (temporarily server shutdowns ) published on the MOTD in order to give the users of the system the ability to adapt to the upcoming, limited availability of the system.
