Mother Church

As Chiesa Madre Chiesa matrice or (from Latin ecclesia mater, Mother Church ) is called in Italy the main church of a place. Occasionally, the term " Duomo " ( Cathedral ) is particularly in the larger towns it used, even if it is not a current or former Episcopal Church.

These main churches have their own patron saint, but which is in common usage usually omitted or only partially used. Thus, for example, Santa Maria Annunciata referred to in Erice usually simple as Chiesa Madre or Duomo Annunziata, Maria Santissima Visitation in Enna also known as Duomo di Enna.
