The Aftokinitodromos 8/Αυτοκινητόδρομος 8 (Greek for, highway 8 ') in Greece connects Athens with the port city of Patras in northwestern Peloponnese. In 2008, the highway was passed as a PPP project to the consortium Olympia Odos, this undertook to develop the road to full motorway.

The length of the motorway link of 215 km ( Patras - Athens). Parts of the road 8 form components of the European Routes 94, 65 and 55

The A 8 passes and touches the towns and cities of Athens, Megara, Corinth and Patras.

Course

The highway 8 replaced in many parts of the national road 8 or the national road 8a. It runs from Athens along the Saronic Gulf via the isthmus of Corinth on the Peloponnese in its northern part to Corinth. From Corinth, it leads along the sea (Gulf of Corinth ), on the Strait of Rio - Antirrio with the Rio Antirrio bridge over to Patras. Notwithstanding the old National Road 8 and 8a leads from the east from Patras around a highway bypass around Patras and joins the National Highway 9, as the road to Pyrgos leads further to the west of the Peloponnese.

Special

The highway 8 follows the course of the Athens National Road 8 and 8a to Patras city center. Before removing the motorway was a dual carriageway ( two lanes with a breakdown lane, oncoming traffic without median strip ) out of Athens via Corinth to Patras ( National Highway 8 ). From Corinth to the triangle Rio Highway 8 uses this road and is therefore, strictly speaking, no more motorway. Only in the area of the junctions and exits the track is expanded dual carriageway ( two lanes and a hard shoulder ).
