Motueka

Motueka is a place in the region in the north of the South Island of New Zealand Tasman. It is located about 50 km northwest of the city of Nelson on the Tasman Bay.

Naming

The name Motueka, originally Motuweka means to Māori " Weka - island ". The Wekaralle is a common bird in New Zealand Rail. Of the locals, the city "Mot " is called.

Demography

With a population of 7122 is Motueka to Nelson and Richmond, the third largest city in the wider community of Nelson. The entire Motueka Ward had June 30, 2009 an estimated 10,900 inhabitants.

Economy

The largest company of the place is Talley 's fish factory. In addition, many artisans have settled in Motueka. Motueka is the center of a growing region for tea, hops and various fruits such as apples, grapes and kiwis.

Motueka offers self touristy bit, but serves as a starting point for trips to the Abel Tasman National Park and Kahurangi National Park and visiting the nearby beaches. Motueka has a Tourist Information ( I-Site).

Traffic

By Motueka the 114.5 km long State Highway 60, which runs Moutueka via a connection to the SH 6 to the southeast preferred cities Richmond and Nelson and 50 km north-west Collingwood connects to the Golden Bay. The leading in the valley of the Motueka River to the south Motueka Valley Highway, formerly the SH61, connects the village to the southwest with the SH 6 at Kohatu Junction near Tapawera.

Motueka has a small airfield from which the day is twice a Flugverbingung to Wellington. 1984 Motueka Air started scheduled flights to Wellington with a Piper Aztec. Later, Nelson and Palmerston North were served with additional Piper Chieftains. 1988 Motueka Air was renamed Air Nelson and moved their headquarters to the airport Nelson.

Situated in a tidal lagoon on the Tasman Bay Port Motueka is located 2 km south of the city center and includes a small commercial area. In addition to boat transfer to the Abel Tasman National Park is also a small sailing harbor exists.

Education

In Motueka there are nine primary schools, the Brooklyn School, Lower Moutere School, Motueka South School, Parklands School, Riwaka School, a Rudolf Steiner School ( a Waldorf school ) St Peter Chanel School, Tasman School and the Tasman Bay Christian School, Christian school.

The only secondary school, the Motueka High School is the largest school in the area Abel Tasman.

Sport and Leisure

The town has a golf course. On the airfield skydiving is offered. The offers include not only tourist -oriented tandem jumps and jump training and skydiving. In addition, the space is regularly used for drag racing events.

The city is represented by teams in the Golden Bay Motueka Rugby Union and the Tasman Rugby Union.

Climate

Motueka has a fairly constant climate conditions in New Zealand. The warmest and thus a typical trip in the New Zealand summer months are from January to March. Motueka is also distributed a place with relatively low rainfall for the whole year.

Motueka has a partnership with Kiyosato on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō.
