Motul, Motul de Carrillo Puerto since 1933, is a small town in the Mexican state of Yucatán, approximately 44 kilometers east of Mérida, and is the administrative seat of the homonymous municipality ( municipio ). The population in 2003 was about 20,000.

History

Motul was founded by Mayan priests Zac Mutul according to the tradition of the Maya in the 11th century. The city was ruled by the princely family of the pitch. After the collapse of the central Maya reign in Mayapán in the 1440s, the pitch ruled the regional Cehpech Kingdom with its capital Motul.

After the Spanish conquest in 1538 the Conquistador Francisco de Montejo Motul made ​​to a Spanish colonial city. From the colonial period, the Franciscan monastery dates of culturally significant frescoes.

Motul received city rights on 22 February 1872.

Motul In the later revolutionary and governor of Yucatán, Felipe Carrillo Puerto was born ( murdered 1924). In his honor, the city received in 1933 officially expanded name Motul de Carrillo Puerto.
