Moulins-Engilbert

Moulins- Engilbert is a commune with 1557 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Nièvre in the Burgundy region. It belongs to the district of Château- Chinon ( Ville) and the Canton of Moulins- Engilbert.

Geography

The municipality is in the Morvan Massif and belongs since 2008 to the Morvan Natural Regional Park. The city is crossed by the river Guignon and its right tributary Garat.

History

Excavations from 1877 brought mosaics, pottery and Roman coins days, it was concluded on the existence of a Roman villa.

According to legend, Angilbert, one of the followers of Charlemagne, Abbot of Saint- Riquier, Count of Ponthieu, the patron saint of the place. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Counts of Nevers. In the castle, stand out from the two towers, in 1424 the wedding of Duke Philip was good and Bonne d' Artois, widow of Philip II of Nevers committed. End of the 14th century Moulins- Engilbert was surrounded by a city wall.

The administrative reform during the Revolution made ​​from Moulins- Engilbert the seat of five cantons, a change in 1800 reduced the number to one.
