Moultrie County, Illinois

The Moultrie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 14,846 inhabitants and a population density of 17.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sullivan.

Geography

The County is located in the central south-east of Illinois. It has an area of 892 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water surface. In the southeast of the county is drained by the Kaskaskie River, which is dammed in its southern neighbor Shelby Coounty to predominantly located in Moultrie County Lake Shelbyville. History

The Moultrie County was formed on February 16, 1843 from Macon County and Shelby County. It was named after William Moultrie, a general of the Revolutionary army from South Carolina and later governor. He defended in 1776 the fort on Sullivan's Iceland from the advancing British, which was later renamed Fort Moultrie.

The first courthouse, a loosely nailed together wooden hut was built in 1847. The second in 1865 and the third, still used today, 1904.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Moultrie County 14,846 people in 5611 households. The population density was 17.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 5611 households lived statistically 2.55 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 98.3 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.0 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 57.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.4 percent were 65 years or older. 51.4 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 48,982. The per capita income was $ 24,078. 10.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
