Mount Alayta

The mighty shield volcano Alayta covers an area of 2700 square kilometers in the west of the Danakil Depression southwest of the Afrerasees in Ethiopia. The height of the volcano is 1501 meters, his last known eruption dates back to 1915. A chain of younger craters forms a north-northwest axis aligned in the basaltic - trachytic shield volcano. The area covered by fresh lava flows Alayta lava field was formed from the north- south aligned columns outbreaks. In two areas in the south of the volcanic complex can be observed fumaroles. Historical records show another outbreak on the southeast flank of the volcano from June to August, 1907.
