Mount Andrus is the southernmost part of the Ames Range above the ridge, which consists of three merging volcanic cones. This extending approximately in a north-south direction volcanic chain originated during the Miocene ( 23.03 to 5.33 million years ago). Mount Andrus is the youngest of them, to the late Pleistocene ( 1.8 million years before the beginning ) into it was active, but possibly even up in the Holocene ( beginning 11,500 years ago), so the present time. The summit of the mountain consists of a tank-shaped crater eruption, a caldera with a diameter of 4.5 km. The funded from the volcanoes of the Ames Range lava has a trachytic composition.

The mountain was first climbed in 1967. It bears the name of the medical officer Carl H. Andrus, who served as a member of the U.S. Navy in the Byrd Station.
