Mount-Augustus-Nationalpark

Mount Augustus National Park is a national park in the north- west of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is located about 850 km from Perth, between the Great Northern and North West Coastal Highway. The park is named after the largest monolith which is located on the surface of the earth, Mount Augustus, named.

Geology

Mount Augustus and Mount Phillip, which lies about 35 km south-west, originated in the Proterozoic than sand and stone blocks were deposited in front of about 1,000 million years ago in a Ursee. These deposits solidified as sandstone and conglomerate that may have been deformed by earth movements. These rocks cover large areas of the National Parks and among these sedimentary rocks is 1.650 million old granite.

Flora and Fauna

At the ends of the water discharging slopes in the transition to the sandy plains grow eucalyptus species and on the sandy plains of acacia species and Mulgabüschen.

In the park there is the emu, goanna and the Red Kangaroo. At Cattle Pool on the Lyons River, a tributary of the Gascoyne River, is a permanent pond with a cormorant - type, swan and duck species. The park has Corella and Kookaburra.

Aboriginal

In the area of the National Park for thousands of years lived the Aborigines of Wadjari that sufficient water found there. From their presence petroglyphs bear witness to the visitor places Mundee, Ooramboo and Beedoboondu as well as numerous stone tools that were found.

Of the Wadjari Dreamtime stories are narrated, which is known by a boy Burringurrah, who fled from an initiation due to large pain. Then he was persecuted because he had violated the tribal law. He was hit by a javelin, one of the usual penalties for violations of tribal rules, and tried to flee but to continue. But the women of the aboriginal beat him and he collapsed and died.

Tourist information

The Burringurrah Drive ( Burringurrah is the Aboriginal name for Mount Augustus ) is a circular route of 49 km in length, with options to navigate with normal vehicles, and an overview of the national park there, how to rock canyons, petroglyphs, picnic areas, hiking trails and more landmarks. Also the Emu Hill Lookout is accessible by normal vehicles that allows a good view of Mount Augustus. A filled in the dry season Billabong is located on the Lyons River. Numerous hiking trails are accessible.
