Mount Bailey is a 2553 m high shield volcano in southern Oregon, USA. He is not far west of the 2799 m high Mount Thielsen.

Name

The origin of the name Mount Bailey is not fully understood. On old maps it is listed as " Old Baldy " or " Old Bailey ". The latter was probably due to errors in the maps. The poor vegetation, thereby acting bald summit is considered as an explanation for the older name of Old Baldy ( age bald head ). A standing with the mountain in relation person named Bailey could not be found. In 1992, the Oregon Geographic Names Board, the Mount Bailey officially decided to honor the naturalist Vernon and Florence Bailey to be named. According to William G. Steel, who was instrumental in the establishment of the nearby Crater Lake National Park, was the name of the Klamath for the volcano Youxlokes, which means roughly Medicine Mountain. Medicine men climbed the Mount Bailey to fast on the top and to get in contact with higher beings of their faith.

Geology

Mount Bailey is part of the Cascade Range. There are several small spatter and cinder cone in its vicinity. Similar to Mount Thielsen owns the volcanic peak in the immediate vicinity rather steep. Investigations revealed that the cone is a maximum of 100 000 years. Originally he came from Basaltandesit, but later only andesite.

The shield volcano is topped by a pyroclastic deposits formed by cones. This now forms the most visible about 600 m high hill. The cone was probably written during several phases of the outbreak. Around since the early Pleistocene is Mount Bailey no longer active. This corresponds roughly to the time of the first volcanic activity also now extinct Mount Mazama. This is 20 km to the southeast.

Use

Mount Bailey is a popular winter sports resort. In the summer it also attracts hikers who appreciate the view of the nearby Diamond Lake. The summit of the volcano can be reached via an 8 -km-long path. The area has vast forests of mountain hemlock, western Weymouth pine and Shasta firs.
