Mount Bona

Mount Bona is a stratovolcano in the Elias range in the east of Alaska. With a height of 5005 m, it is the fifth highest mountain in the United States. After the three highest peaks Mexican, Pico de Orizaba, Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl, Mount Bona is the highest volcano in North America.

Glacier

Similar to the neighboring Mount Churchill almost the entire massif is heavily glaciated. From Mount Bona the ice of the 64 km long Klutlan glacier, which extends to the Canadian Yukon Territory dates. The Russell Glacier in the north is another glacier system on the slopes of the volcano.

History

In 1897, the Fourteener got by Luigi Amadeo of Savoy a name. This sifted through the mountain during the first ascent of about 130 km southeast to Mount Saint Elias. Bona was the name of his yacht. Was first conquered Mount Bona in 1930 by Allen Carpe, Terris Moore and Andrew Taylor. The normal route to the summit runs today through the eastern ridge, from where also Mount Churchill is relatively easy to climb.
