Mount Coonowrin

The Mount Coonowrin in the Glass House Mountains

The Mount Coonowrin, also called crookneck, is one of twelve volcanic mountains in the Glass House Mountains in Queensland in Australia. The mountain lies 19 km north of Caboolture or an hour 's drive north of Brisbane. It consists of rhyolite and is easily recognizable by its sleek and pointed shape.

Dreamtime

The mountain name is derived from the Aborigines of Dungidau: Kunna means neck and Warang crooked. The mountains of the Glass Mountains home are the subject of Dreamtime stories of the Aborigines; in the Mount Coonowrin is the son of Mount Tibrogargan and mother Mount Beerwah. During a violent storm Tibrigargan ordered his son Coonowrin, the mother Beerwah and his siblings to safety. For fear of the storm, however, he did not help them, but ran away. Then his father Tibrogargan him with one blow broke his neck. Out of shame in front of his son's cowardice Tibrigargan has turned him to his back today.

Mountaineering

The Mount Coonowrin has a long history of climber. However, the climb has been banned since 1999 because it threatens the stability.
