Mount Darwin (Andes)

The Monte Darwin ( also Cerro Darwin, both on German Darwin Mountain) is the highest mountain of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and is located in the Chilean part of the main island. North of the Beagle Channel located the Monte Darwin is located in the Cordillera Darwin, the southernmost of the large elevations of the Andes. The mountain is composed of crystalline mica schist and is covered primarily at its southern slopes of the ice fields.

The first ascent was made in 1961 by Eric Shipton, E. Garcia, F. Vivanco and C. Marangunic. The best time for climbing is from December to March.

Was named the mountain during the second voyage of HMS Beagle by Captain Robert FitzRoy on 12 February 1834 the 25th anniversary of Charles Darwin.
