Mount Elephant

Mount Elephant is a 240 m high spatter and cinder cone, which is one kilometer from the Australian city of Derrinallum in southeastern Victoria. The volcano erupted in the period 20000-5000 years ago, before he went out and formed a cone.

Name

In Victoria, the mountain is known by the early European settlers Swagmans Lighthouse ( German: migrant workers Lighthouse ) called. The mountain was because it depicts the outline of a reclining elephant, renamed Mount Elephant.

Importance

Mount Elephant has been placed under national nature conservation because it is one of the highest ash and cinder cones of the earth and of geological, historical, cultural and scientific importance for Australia.

Tourist information

The mountain was located until 2000 into private hands until it was acquired by a local Trust to protect nature and because of the interests of the local community in restoration and tourism. When attempts were made to open another quarry on the mountain, this was not approved.

Mount Elephant is located at the eastern entrance of the Kanawinka Geopark, which contains additional important geological evidence of Australia. The mountain is from the Hamilton Highway from Derrinallum from accessible from Geelong, Ballarat and Warrnambool with an automobile in an hour and from Melbourne and Hamilton in two hours.
